- Finished or Unfinished Wood
All without sanding or priming!
WHAT TYPE OF PAINT CAN I USE WITH VSR CHALKY PAINT POWDER?
You can use any brand, sheen, or color of latex or acrylic paint with Vintage Storehouse Chalky Paint Powder. We personally love using Behr, Benjamin Moore, and Sherwin Williams Products.
Although you can use any sheen of paint with VSR Chalky Paint Powder, if you are looking for a traditional chalk-style look and feel, we recommend using a flat or matte sheen, then waxing with Fiddes Supreme Wax or VSR Hemp Seed Oil to protect your finish.
If you are looking for a high gloss finish, the best way to achieve this is to use a high gloss paint. In most cases, you do not need to add an additional top coat to your painted piece, because the high gloss surface has plenty of protection built in. This will give you the most consistent and even finish. You can also apply polyurethane over the top if desired. You can also use wax to achieve a glossy finish, but you will be doing a lot of buffing and may want to consider purchasing a Round Drill Buffing Brush to save you time.
WHAT’S THE BIG DEAL ABOUT VSR ANTIQUING POWDER?
Vintage Storehouse Antiquing Powder is a non-toxic, highly pigmented fine powder designed to create beautiful faux finishes including that gorgeous distressed/antique look that we all love. VS Antiquing Powder is available in 9 beautiful colors that can be mixed to create countless custom colors as well.
WHY WE LOVE IT
- Quicker & Easier application than traditional dark wax or glaze.
- More control over depth of finish. You have the ability to create a lighter or darker effect and blend that effect to create varying texture throughout the entire piece.
- Highly pigmented powders means a little goes a long way. One small container of Antiquing Powder can do approximately 1-2 pieces. A large container can do approximately 4-6. (Coverage may vary depending upon the size of the piece and the amount of product applied).
- More Authentic Look – Vintage Storehouse Antiquing Powder is a fine powder that when applied – closely mimics the look of real authentic dust and debris that would gather on a piece over time.
- Comes in 9 gorgeous colors that can be mixed to create countless custom colors.
HOW DO I APPLY ANTIQUING POWDER?
INSTRUCTIONS TO APPLY VS ANTIQUING POWDER:
For the most authentic look, we recommend using one of our dusting brushes to apply VS Antiquing Powder directly after applying your final coat of clear wax. Focus on cracks, details and imperfections. Work the dust into all the cracks and texture of the paint until you get the desired effect. In most cases, you’ll want to remove excess powder for a lighter effect with either mineral spirits or another coat of clear wax. Mineral Spirits gives you more control over the depth of the finish, while wax will provide more texture. Mineral Spirits will also help you spread the powder around a little more to make sure to fill in all small holes and dings.
How to Apply VS Antiquing Powder Using Fiddes Wax (Coming Soon!)
DO I NEED TO SEAL VSR ANTIQUING POWDER?
The short answer, No.
If you are applying Antiquing Powder by working it into your wet wax, then the wax serves as a protective layer for the Paint and the Antiquing Powder.
If you apply the powder with VSR Hemp Seed Oil, again the Hemp Seed Oil serves as a protective layer for your paint and Antiquing Powder.
WHAT IS VSR MICA POWDER?
WHAT IS VSR HEMP SEED OIL?
Hemp Seed Oil is a wonderful product that can be used as a top coat over any porous surface, including pieces painted with VSR Chalky Paint Powder or VSR Metallic Chalky Paint. Hemp Seed Oil creates a beautiful matte satin finish that looks beautiful. Compared to Wax, pieces finished with VSR Hemp Seed Oil can be placed outside without issue.
VSR Hemp Seed Oil can also be used to apply VSR Antiquing Powder or VSR Mica Powders.
HOW DO I APPLY VS MICA POWDER?
CAN I MIX VS CHALKY PAINT POWDER WITH METALLIC PAINT?
Absolutely. We even have our own line of Metallic Paints that already have VS Chalky Paint Powder mixed in! You can find our collection of VS Metallic Chalky Paints in our shop.
WHAT TYPE OF TOP COAT DO I NEED?
Although you do not need a top coat with VS Chalky Paint Powder, we do recommend using one to keep your furniture looking beautiful longer. You can use any type of top coat you prefer to seal your pieces painted with VS Chalky Paint Powder, or any of our other products.
We recommend using either Fiddes Supreme Wax or VS Hemp Seed Oil to seal your painted pieces. Both options provide a beautiful finish and are easy to apply. To find out more about which top coat is best for your project, see our post on Hemp Seed Oil vs Wax.
WHATS THE DIFFERENCE BETWEEN HEMP SEED OIL AND WAX?
While both Hemp Seed Oil and Fiddes Supreme Furniture Wax are both great options for sealing your newly painted piece, there are a few differences between the two. Below you will find an overview of the main differences between each finish. For more detailed information, please check out our post Hemp Seed Oil vs Wax.
Hemp Seed Oil
Why We Love It & When to Use It
VS Hemp Seed Oil can be used on any porous surface to give that extra layer of protection. This makes it a perfect match for VS Chalky Paint Powder as the Powder adds that porous property to your regular latex paint!
The biggest benefit to VS Hemp Seed Oil over Furniture Wax is that it does not melt in heat. This means you can use it to seal furniture that will be placed outside. It is also a good idea for vendors who are planning to display their pieces at an outside farmers market or booth.
In additional to having the ability to be used outdoors, hemp seed oil is very quick to apply, can be used to revitalize worn, dried out wood, and can be used to wet sand creating a buttery smooth finish on any painted piece. It creates a soft matte to satin finish depending on the number of coats used.
How to Apply It
You can apply VS Hemp Seed Oil with either a soft, lint free cloth or a paint brush. If using a brush, make sure to wipe of any oil that does not get absorbed into the finish after a few minutes.
Although VS Hemp Seed Oil will feel dry to the touch (although slightly oily) within a few mintues, it will not be fully cured for approximately 30 days. (That slightly oily feeling will go away within a few days – just make sure that you’ve removed any excess oil with a clean cloth).
Durability and Care
Pieces finished with VS Hemp Seed Oil are very simple to care for and keep looking great! To Maintain, just dust with a dry cloth, and for those stubborn spills and messes, wipe with a damp soft cloth. If you do get a scratch or ding, it’s a very simple fix. Just wet sand the problem area, apply some touch up paint, and re-apply VS Hemp Seed Oil. You can’t do that with Polyurethane!
Fiddes Supreme Wax
Why We Love It & When to Use It
Fiddes Supreme Wax is a great solution for sealing your painted piece. It works best on porous surfaces, making it another great combination with VS Chalky Paint Powder. It is easily applied, and absorbs directly into the paint or wood, creating a very durable finish. It creates a beautiful soft buttery look and feel to your finished piece.
Fiddes Supreme Wax can be used on any piece that will be exclusively stored indoors. Furniture Wax is a poor solution for any piece that will be on display outside, or will be stored in a hot truck or storage unit for an extended period of time.
How to Apply It
Fiddes Supreme Wax is really easy to apply. It can be applied using one of our wax applicator brushes to help work the wax into all the nooks and crannies, or it can be applied using a microfiber waxing cloth. We recommend using our disposable microfiber waxing cloths to apply the wax, and our microfiber buffing cloths to buff it to a beautiful shine.
Drying Time and Care
Fiddes Supreme Wax dries extremely fast, and should feel dry to the touch within about 5 minutes after being applied. Then it will need approximately 30 days to fully cure.
To care for your waxed piece, dust with a dry cloth and clean up and stubborn spills or messes with a wet soft cloth. If your piece does get scratched or damage, you can quickly scrub with a fine grade steel wool, touch up and re-wax.
HOW DO I APPLY HEMP SEED OIL?
HOW DO I APPLY FIDDES WAX?
Part of the reason we are so passionate about Fiddes Supreme Wax is because it is super easy to apply. Fiddes Was is a soft wax, meaning it has a very soft creamy texture, similar to shortening.
There are tons of ways to apply wax to painted pieces, but our favorite way is to scoop a small amount of wax onto one of our disposable microfiber cloths with a plastic spoon. Roll the ball of wax up into the center of the cloth, and warm up slightly with the palm of your hand until you can feel the wax seeping through the cloth. Then just wipe down your entire piece with the cloth, making sure to re-load once you can’t see wax coming out anymore. (The wax will look wet when you first apply it, almost like you were wiping down the piece with a damp towel).
After your wax has dried and cured (about 3-8 hours), you can go back in and buff if desired. Buffing just amps up and evens out the sheen.
You can see tutorials on how we like to wax and buff our pieces here.
HOW DO I MIX VS CHALKY PAINT POWDER INTO MY LATEX PAINT?
Mixing Vintage Storehouse Chalky Paint Powder is super easy! We even have a video tutorial to show you how. Check it out!
DOES VS CHALKY PAINT POWDER ALTER THE COLOR OF MY PAINT?
Absolutely not! Although the powder is white, it will not alter the color of your paint once it’s been thoroughly mixed in. You can even use VS Chalky Paint Powder with Black & Metallic Paints!
WHAT TYPE OF PREP-WORK IS REQUIRED OR RECOMMENDED?
We’re glad you asked! One of the biggest benefits of using VS Chalky Paint Powder is the fact that you can skip the painstaking prep work normally associated with painting over already finished surfaces. This means NO priming or sanding!
We do recommend that you thoroughly clean the surface of what you are working on with at least soap and water prior to painting. For really grimy pieces, you might want to consider getting a stronger cleaner, such as TSP, that can really cut through the oils that have settled into the piece. Make sure that the surface is clean from all dust and oil prior to painting.
And that’s it! Once your piece is squeaky clean you are ready to paint!
HOW MUCH VS CHALKY PAINT POWDER DO I NEED?
The amount of VS Chalky Paint Powder you will need varies depending on the size of your project and the number of coats you will need to apply. Generally, 1 4 oz. container of VS Chalky Paint Powder is enough to do a large sized dresser, or 2 smaller sized dressers.
HOW MANY COATS OF PAINT WILL I NEED?
The number of coats you will need for a particular project varies depending on the original color of the project and the color you are using to paint. For most projects, 2 coats is more than enough to get a solid color. If you are using a lighter color, such as white, you might need 3 coats to get a completely opaque (solid) coverage.

We offer multiple sizes of Vintage Storehouse Chalky Paint Powder so that you can purchase only what you need, eliminating waste and saving you money!

WHAT TYPE OF SHEEN CAN YOU USE VS CHALKY PAINT POWDER WITH?
Blue Minerals can be used with any sheen, brand or color of paint. The minerals in our recipe do flatten the sheen slightly, so you should purchase your paint accordingly.
If you are looking for a traditional Chalk-style finish, then we recommend getting a flat or matte paint. Benjamin Moore’s Matte Sheen Paint is the flattest we have found, and provides a gorgeous silky chalk finish, but other brands work well too! Keep in mind the flatter then sheen, the more likely brush strokes are to appear if you are using a brush.
If you will be waxing your furniture to protect it (which we highly recommend), we recommend using an eggshell finish. This makes waxing slightly easier, as the contrast between the wax and the paint is lessened.
WHAT IS THE DIFFERENCE BETWEEN VINTAGE STOREHOUSE CHALKY PAINT POWDER AND CHALK BOARD PAINT?
Paint mixed with VS Chalky Paint Powder and Chalk Board Paint are actually very different. Chalk Board paint generally is what you would get if you added Chalk or Calcium Carbonate to regular latex paint. Although it does allow you to write on the surface with chalk, it does not add any porous agents to the paint. This means that there is no additional gripping ability over just regular latex or acrylic paint. With Chalk Board Paint you still need to sand and prime your piece prior to painting.
VS Chalky Paint Powder is much more than that. Although our product does contain some Calcium Carbonate, it also includes multiple other ingredients purely designed to help the paint adhere to surfaces without the need for sanding or priming. This saves you hours of time and tons of money that you would spend on sandpaper and primer. It can still be used to create a chalk board in any color you like, in many cases at less cost than name brand Chalk Board Paints, but it can be used for a world of other applications as well!
